This family has proved a bit of a mystery. The only documents found so far identifying Joseph Short are the marriage record in 1815 and Jane Short's death certificate in 1883. He does not appear with his wife and daughter in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses but Jane McEwan's status in 1861 is Married and in 1871 it is Widowed - no death has been found in Scotland. Neither has Jane McEwan's death been found. She may be the Jean McEwen baptized on 20 June 1795 in Lismore, Argyllshire, daughter of David McEwen and Harriet Nimmo - her birthplace is given as Appin, Argyllshire in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses.
No births or baptisms of children of this couple have been found in Scottish Parish records.
