Three of the children of David Downie and Mary Chalmers Spence became teachers, David Downie and Helen Lawson Downie ending their careers as Primary School Head Teachers in Innerwick and East Linton respectively. Both David Downie and Mary Chalmers Spence Downie graduated M.A. from the University of Edinburgh, Mary spending a brief period as a teacher before her marriage. They were the first of my line of Downies to graduate from a University.
